Sometimes beautiful things are born in unexpected situations: this can apply to Umberto Notarnicola and Bruno Violo, two men who, despite their origins being traditionally tied to regions of great red wines, were able to create one of the most important private wine company in the province of Rome, starting from Frascati, the historical white wine of the Roman Castles area. Their passion for wine and the charming territory of the Roman Castles has induced them to go beyond their Piedmontese (Bruno) and Apulian (Umberto) origins, with the creation, in 1972, of a winery on the hill of San Marco, which gave the name to the company.
The innovative challenge undertaken by Umberto and Bruno of founding a wine company which would mainly produce Frascati, the wine of the zone par excellence, aiming however for a high quality product, has appeared to be a winning choice. Umberto and Bruno’s important job and dedication today, over 30 years after the foundation, is matched by that of their sons who are working side by side with them: Danilo Notarnicola and Pietro Violo. Thanks to them the road to innovation, already undertaken by their fathers, has been taken further, introducing new grape varieties and, at the same time, bringing out the most important native varieties of Lazio.
San Marco is today a dynamic company, successfully projected into the world wide market, with a philosophy of bringing to all tables, in Italy and abroad, modern wines in style, which can be, at the same time, a genuine expression of the territory from which they come.
Thanks to an accurate research project and to innovation, in fact, the famous Frascati wines have been joined by the Solo line, wines produced with only one variety, bringing out the characteristics of each grape variety. On being launched, the Solo line has represented a major innovation in the Latium panorama, gaining lots of attention from experts and amateurs.
San Marco has always matched tradition and modernity by skilfully vinifying grapes gathered in particularly suitable vineyards with the most modern techniques. In 2003 San Marco was the very first company in Lazio to apply the so called “cooling technique” which implies the controlled contribution of liquid and solid carbon dioxide: an absolutely natural source of cold that allows to obtain wines of shinier colours, more structured and with marked aromatic notes, guaranteeing a better vinification.
